Coloured Salt in a Jar

Ingredients

Coloured chalk
Salt (any brand)
Tray
Jar
Containers
and time

Method

1. Place some salt on a tray then rub a piece of coloured chalk until the salt changes colour.
2. Place in a bowl or container eg a takeaway food container. Repeat the process with more salt and other chalk colours, until you have the quantity coloured salt in all the colours you
want.
3. Pour the coloured salt into your clear jar one at a time and make patterns with the colours.


Finger Paint

Ingredients
½ cup cornstarch
3 tblsp. sugar
½ tsp. salt
2 cups cold water

Method
In a medium pan, mix all the ingredients together. Cook over low heat 10 to 15 minutes. Keep stirring the mixture until it is smooth and thick. After it has thickened take the pan off the stove and let the mixture cool. After cooling, divide the finger paint into storage containers depending on how many colours you would like. Add a few drops of food colouring to each container. Stir the colouring in to the paint to determine colour.

Method

Trace an outline of your child’s hand onto coloured paper and cut out. Using a pencil, roll the fingers up so that they curl. Curl the hand shape vertically into a lily shaped cylinder with the finger curls curling outwards. Staple flower to the straw, along with some cutout leaves. Make a nice bouquet by adding more flowers.


Handprints

4 cups of flour
1 cup of salt

Method

Mix all the ingredients together in the bowl then add water to get to desired dampness. Take half of the salt and gently flatten with the palm of your hand. Don’t let the mixture get too thin, keep it nice and thick. Ask your child to make a handprint or footprint in the dough. You can also write the child’s name and the year on the back with a toothpick. Allow to dry for 24 hours.


Indoor Fishing

Ingredients

A stick (preferrably without a sharp end)
Some Wool/String (2x as long as stick)
Cardboard/Thick Paper
Scissors
Paper Clips

Method

1. Tape or tie a long piece of string/wool on the end of a stick. Be Careful with the stick.
2. On the end of the string/wool, attach a small magnet.
3. Make some fish, cut fish shapes out of some thick paper or cardboard, and put a paper clip on each fish.
4 Put the fish on the floor and dangle the magnet over the paper clips. Watch out! These fish bite!

Note: When children get older, you can put slips of paper under the paperclips that say different words, or have different shapes, colors, numbers, or letters of the alphabet. Then let your child identify each fish.


Make your own Bubbles

3 parts detergent (not coconut based)
1 part glycerine
10 parts water

Method

Mix together and start blowing.

NOTE: You need to ensure that the children using this mixture know the difference between sucking and blowing

IDEAS FOR BUBBLE RING: Anything with a hole that is enclosed eg: twisted wire, pipe cleaners, old keys, you will find lots of things in the kitchen.


Painted Flowerpots

Method

Put down some newspaper on the table and use your paints to create a beautiful painted flowerpot for spring flowers. You can paint flowers on the outside of the pot, or personalise it with your name for yourself or as a gift. Have fun! The more colours used the better your pot will look in the garden. For something fun, paint a face on your pot and plant grass seeds to give your face “hair” that you can give a real haircut!


Playdough - Uncooked

Ingredients

1 cup plain flour
1/4 cup salt
1 tblspn cooking oil
Food colouring (a few drops)
1/2 cup water

Method

1. Mix the flour and salt together. Add the oil.
2. Add the food colouring to the water,
3. Add the coloured liquid, a little at a time to the flour mixture.
4. Knead until smooth and has the consistency of scone mixture.

Note: This is a good quantity for one child. Multiply the mixture by number of children playing.
